Moving house can easily feel like an overwhelming project. Boxes, furniture, paperwork and endless to‑dos pile up, and it can be hard to know where to start. But with a clear plan and realistic priorities, you can make the process far more manageable – and even find a bit of calm amid the chaos. Here’s a guide to help you prioritise your moving tasks and keep your head above water from start to finish.

Start with an overview – make a plan

The first step is to create structure. Sit down with a notebook or a digital tool and list everything that needs to be done. Divide your tasks into categories such as planning, packing, moving day, and after the move.

Once you have the full picture, start prioritising. Highlight the time‑sensitive tasks – like giving notice to your landlord, booking a moving van, or updating your address with An Post. These should be tackled first. The rest can be spread out over the following weeks.

A good tip is to set realistic deadlines for each category. That way, you avoid the last‑minute rush that often turns moving into a stressful scramble.

Declutter before you pack

One of the biggest time‑wasters when moving is packing things you don’t actually need. Use the move as an opportunity to declutter.

Go room by room and sort your belongings into three piles: keep, sell/donate, and recycle/bin. It might take time, but you’ll save space, money and energy on moving day.

If you find it hard to part with things, ask yourself: Have I used this in the past year? If not, it might be time to let it go. Local charity shops or community swap groups are great places to give items a second life.

Pack smart – and in the right order

When you start packing, begin with items you rarely use – books, decorations, or off‑season clothes. This helps you maintain a functional home right up until moving day.

Label each box clearly with the room it belongs to and a short description of what’s inside. You can even use colour‑coded stickers to make unpacking easier.

Don’t forget to prepare a “first‑day box” with essentials: toothbrush, change of clothes, phone charger, kettle, tea bags, toilet paper and some snacks. You’ll thank yourself when you arrive at your new home and can’t face rummaging through boxes.

Coordinate moving day in advance

Moving day itself requires careful coordination. Will you get help from friends and family, or hire a professional moving company? Either way, make sure everyone knows their role and the schedule.

If you’re hiring movers, get a written quote and check what’s included – for example, insurance, packing materials, or handling of heavy items. If you’re doing it yourself, make sure you have the right equipment: trolley, blankets, straps and gloves.

It’s also worth sketching a simple floor plan for your new home. Knowing where each piece of furniture should go will save you from heavy lifting later.

Don’t forget the practical details

Amid the moving chaos, it’s easy to overlook the small but important details. Make sure to:

  • Update your address with An Post, your bank, GP, and any subscriptions.
  • Transfer or cancel utilities such as electricity, broadband and waste collection.
  • Defrost and clean your freezer a day or two before the move.
  • Check cleaning requirements for your old home to avoid extra charges.

Create a checklist you can tick off as you go. It’s satisfying and helps you stay on top of everything.

Take breaks – and celebrate when it’s done

Moving isn’t just physically demanding; it’s mentally exhausting too. Remember to take breaks along the way. Have a cup of tea in the middle of the mess, go for a short walk, or take an evening off to relax.

When you’re finally settled, celebrate the milestone. Order a takeaway, open a bottle of wine, or invite friends over for a casual house‑warming. It marks the end of a busy period – and the start of a new chapter.

Moving is more than boxes

Moving home isn’t just about transporting your belongings from one place to another. It’s a transition – from one daily routine to a new one. By prioritising your tasks, taking things step by step, and giving yourself room to breathe, you can turn the move into a positive experience rather than a stressful one.

With the right planning, moving chaos doesn’t have to be a battle – it can be a process you manage confidently, one task at a time.
